World Cup translators to help Gyeonggi tourism March 30, 2005 ㅡ Thousands of bilingual volunteers who worked as translators during the 2002 World Cup are working again, this time helping Gyeonggi province promote a tourism project. Lee Je-hoon, head of a volunteer translation service called the Before Babel Brigade, met yesterday with Sohn Hak-kyu, governor of Gyeonggi province. Mr. Lee agreed to provide 2,200 volunteers who can speak 17 foreign languages. The BBB group will start distributing a card inscribed with this year''s "Visit Gyeonggi- Korea" logo and a BBB hotline number (1588-5644), across the province. By dialing the number on the card, tourists are connected to an interpreter''s cell phone line. The service include languages such as English, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. "This could help foreigners visiting Korea when they are in trouble and also help enhance the nation''s image," said a BBB official. The BBB group said their volunteers have been praised for their satisfying work during the 2002 World Cup, the 2002 Busan Asian Games, the 2003 Daegu Universiade and the Gyeongju World Culture Expo in 2003. The translation group was formed in April 2002.
